Creating Inclusive Programs for New Employees
Did you know that most employees decide to leave a job within their first 18 months with an organization? There are many factors that can engage or disengage employees, including cultural elements. Here are some things that an organization can do to make all employees feel valued and included right from their first day on the job.
Building Inclusive Training Programs
When you are creating orientation handbooks, developing onboarding programs, and writing training materials, make sure that these resources will be accessible to and understood by everyone. Specific support people, such as translators, might be appropriate. Where possible, offer several different learning methods, including graphics and audio. Remember that games and humor do not always translate well.
Offering Supporting Programs
If appropriate, the workplace may offer additional, optional training in language skills, cultural customs, or other areas that would be beneficial to employees. Making these resources widely available will ensure that no one is singled out and that people know where to find help when they need it. Information might be posted on the website, in the lunchroom, and in orientation materials. It might also be helpful to translate the programs into different languages.
Getting Additional Help
Employees may also appreciate guidance to additional, external resources, such as cultural support groups, new immigrant programs, and language courses. These resources should be widely shared and available to all.
The Role of Mentors
Mentoring programs can be very valuable to new employees, particularly if they are trying to overcome cultural or language barriers while learning their new job. Create mentoring partnerships that make sense, but don’t impose cultural limitations.
Possible answers:
- Taking language lessons to address someone in their own mother tongue.
- Asking and learning more about the employee’s culture.
- Inviting the employee to your home.
